INDUSTRY – Townspeople here will be responsible for paying for their trash disposal this year, rather than having the town pick up the tipping fee.

Voters approved the solid waste measure after discussion Saturday during the town meeting, Town Clerk Angel Davis said Monday.

The town will continue to operate the recycling station at the Town Office, she said.

Although all three incumbent selectmen weren’t seeking re-election, two of them won anyway. In fact, all of them ended up with a good tally of write-in votes.

Voters cast 89 votes for incumbent First Selectman Lee Ireland and 81 votes for Tiffany Maiuri, Davis said.

In the contest for the second selectman’s seat, former Town Clerk Trudy Nutting was elected with 102 votes. Incumbent Selectman Carolyn Eaton received 80 write-in votes.

Incumbent Third Selectman Robert Geisser found himself re-elected with 70 votes to challengers Bruce Moulton’s 55 votes and Lewis Glidden Jr.’s 45 votes.

Attempts to reach Ireland and Geisser to see if they’ve accepted the positions were unsuccessful on Sunday and Monday.

Also winning re-election for one year in uncontested races were Davis as town clerk and treasurer, Martha Wing as tax collector and Wes Witherly as road commissioner. Incumbent SAD 9 Director Mark Prentiss, who was unchallenged for the three-year term, also won re-election, Davis said.

About 60 people attended the meeting where voters approved all articles in two hours, Davis said. Those included authorizing selectmen to explore and proceed with the process of changing the selectmen’s terms from one year to three-year, staggered terms, starting next year. That way, the town board wouldn’t lose all its incumbents at once.

Industry’s budget for 2006 is $309,521, which is down 5.1 percent, in part because of less money being raised for solid waste disposal, Davis had said previously.
