Pitchers and catchers report for the start of high school baseball season on Monday, but at least one team is still uncertain who will be running practice when they do.
Mt. Abram has not officially named a new baseball coach to replace Marc Keller. The opening was posted, but a lack of candidates has school administrators considering other alternatives.
“We’re probably going to shuffle some people,” said Mt. Abram athletic director Jeff Pillsbury. “We’ve been scrambling. It’s not an ideal situation, for sure.”
Pillsbury said Wednesday he was considering asking Rick Norton, who coached JV baseball last year and was expecting to coach varsity softball this year, to move back over to baseball. Pillsbury, who coached softball last year, would then return to coach again this season. He could not be reached for comment Thursday.
The Roadrunners finished 8-8 last season and lost in the Western Class C preliminary round to Wiscasset.
Two other schools in the region will begin the season with new coaches. Former Edward Little star and University of Maine product Todd Cifelli is taking over at Lewiston for Don King, while Don Hebert replaces Joe Knowlton at Dirigo.
Basketball openings
A number of local boys’ varsity basketball jobs opened up after the season in the Mountain Valley Conference.
Bill Caddigan has stepped down at Telstar after one season, and Frank Williams has resigned after two seasons as Jay’s coach. Doug Sautter has not officially resigned at Lisbon but said after the Greyhounds’ Western Class B prelim loss to Poland that he planned on stepping down after seven years at the helm to spend more time with his family.
