MECHANIC FALLS – Two young men allegedly stole a friend’s new car, rolled it on Water Street and ran off Saturday after 8 p.m., according to Officer Joshua Smith.

Michael Rivard, 20, of Norway, allegedly hit a pole and landed the 2000 Dodge Neon on its roof. Both Rivard and a passenger fled the scene.

Smith caught up with the driver at a place he was known to visit. Rivard was charged with operating under the influence, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, operating without a license and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He was taken to St. Mary’s hospital with minor injuries.

A state police K-9 searched the area for more than an hour looking for the passenger but came up empty. He was still at large at 11:30 p.m.

The friend’s car was totaled.
