TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) – A building at the former Taunton State Hospital was destroyed by a massive general alarm fire on Sunday night.

The building has been closed for decades and it is not believed that anyone was inside.

More than 20 pieces of firefighting equipment from Taunton and surrounding communities helped battle the fire. Firefighters at first had trouble getting water on the blaze and had to draw water from a nearby pond.

A nearby building used the state Division of Youth Services that housed 60 people was evacuated as a precaution even though it was not in immediate danger.

One firefighter was injured battling the blaze and had to be taken to the hospital, according to broadcast reports. The nature of his injuries was not immediately known.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze.
