While reading a letter to the editor recently, I couldn’t help but think how much of a sad affair it is when a citizen of a neighboring city notices that some Auburn city leaders are less than professional and, as one citizen said, “They still don’t get it.”

Councilor Bethel Shields said she “Resents the accusation that the councilors are not listening to the residents.” She continued to say that it is like raising a teenager who wants to do something that the parent disagrees with – no matter how many excuses or complaints the teen comes up with, the parent still needs to say no.

I believe that was said during the March 6 council meeting, during which the building of the new parking garage was brought up.

I take exception to Councilor Shields’ referring to myself and other concerned Auburn citizens as teenagers, and that she feels she has to play the role of the parent to say no.

I will be 59 years old in April and my mom, bless her soul, has passed away. I do not need Shields dictating what she feels is best for me and the citizens of Auburn. As a councilor, she should be listening to citizens, not preaching to them.

I wish more Auburn citizens would voice their opinions on how they feel our city officials are doing.
