PORTLAND – Robert Smart, of Scarborough, died Saturday evening, March 18, surrounded by those he loved so dearly, his wife and children.

He was born in Stratton, the son of Lloyd Patrick and Sibyl Myers Smart. He attended local schools and served in the U.S. Navy as a gunners mate third class during the Korean War.

He began a lifelong career in construction in the field of drilling and blasting specialist for E.B. White, H. E. Sargent and Maine Drilling and Blasting. His challenges and accomplishments included the original Foxboro Stadium, Interstate 95 from Augusta to Houlton, the airstrip at Limestone, the Maine Turnpike, the Kangamangus Highway and the Spaulding Turnpike. During these years, he made many friends. He had great wit and was always playing jokes on his fellow workers.

Robert was a lifetime member of the BPOE, Dead River Alumni Association.

Robert is survived by his wife, Joan; mother, Sibyl; children, Jerry (Marguerite), Brian (Maureen) and Robyn (Stephen); three grandsons, Connor, Callaghan and Griffin; his brother, Willis (Anna); nephews, Robert (Pam) and Bryan (Teri).
