Out of about 75 drawings only one was picked. The creative drawing designed by seventh grader, Brittney Martin, which represents not only art but also the state of Maine, was made into a flag.
The colorful flag is filled with paintbrushes held by the state bird chickadee, a lobster, a moose, a lighthouse, and other representations of Maine. The competition among the Lewiston Middle School students was held for the 20th annual National Youth Art Month. School Flags Across the US…Flying High event to recognize talented students. After Brittney’s winning drawing was selected it had to be transferred to a flag that will be shown at different locations across the U.S.A., along with the flags made by students of the other 49 states.
Brittney and her group of helpers, Jacie Pelletier, Abby Blaisdell, and I were directed by art teacher Kay Allison to paint, cut, and put the flag together. On March 22-26 it will hang at the National Art Education Association Convention in Chicago. Then on March 27- April 15 it will be at the Postal Museum. Next it will be sent to Boston, MA on April 20-22 at the NAMTA. The flags will also be shown in Washington D.C. at the Congressional Reception and flag event.
Special thanks to Mrs. Judy Howard for sewing the flag together, Ms. Pat Despre for donating the canvas and grommets, and Mrs. Janice Plourde for funding the project.
