Police think burglaries in Jay and Wilton on Tuesday morning may have been committed by the same group of people and may be related to the string of odd burglaries that have taken place around here since January.

A little after 1 a.m. Tuesday, Jay police responded to an alarm at My Dad’s Place on the Old Jay Hill Road. The alarm had been set off when the burglar or burglars pried open the front door, according to Jay Detective Roderick Small. The intruders stole “under $300” in cash and five cartons of cigarettes, Small said.

Jay police Tuesday were following up on “a number of leads,” Small said. He also said that because of the time it happened and a few other details, police think the Jay burglary might have been committed by the same person or group of people that burglarized the East Wilton Post Office Tuesday night.

Wilton Police Chief Wayne Gallant said Tuesday that “sometime during the night,” the post office on Main Street in East Wilton was broken into. “Entry was made by breaking the back door open,” incurring about $100 of damage, he said. “There was no criminal mischief – no damage inside, but we believe there are some things (like postage stamps) that may have been taken.”

He added he wanted to assure local people that “it doesn’t appear that any mail was contaminated or corrupted” during the burglary.

Gallant asked that anyone who saw anything even slightly out of the ordinary call the police department or e-mail the department on the Web site www.propertycrimes.com. “We’re just hoping for any input we can get from the public – it always helps us,” he said.
