LEWISTON – As much as he’s enjoyed the last five years in the kitchen, Jim Murray is ready to hang up his apron and close Nothing But the Blues Cafe.

The funky eatery on College Street has been a mainstay with Bates College students and others who crave ethnic or vegetarian fare unique to chef Murray’s menu. But advancing rheumatoid arthritis is forcing Murray’s hand; he’ closing the restaurant March 31.

“It’s pretty much the medical issues that are going on, … I’m down to three hours a day in the kitchen,” said Murray.

His condition started to worsen last August, but Murray held on. The pain continued to increase until he realized he simply couldn’t give 100 percent any more.

“Mentally, I’m still in the game, but physically, I’m not there,” he said.

Murray said some people have expressed interest in buying the business, but he hasn’t seen any money yet. Nor will he consider catering on his own.

“No, I’m done with cooking,” he said.

He plans to take some time off and enjoy being home with his 2- and 4-year-old children once the cafe closes. He said customers have been shocked at the news, especially students and staff from Bates.

“But they understand, I’m in miserable pain,” he said.
