GREENWOOD – Voters will be asked whether they want to raise $1.2 million in property taxes this year, an increase of about $77,000 from 2005, at the annual town meeting Saturday.

The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Town Hall. A total of 36 articles are on this year’s warrant.

The total town budget for 2006 is $1.7 million. Voters will be asked Saturday to appropriate $506,316 from non-property tax revenue toward the total budget, with the remainder to be raised by property taxes.

Non-property tax revenue includes items such as excise tax, state revenue sharing and local road assistance.

Article 35 asks residents to vote by written ballot to increase the property tax levy limit of $465,382, established for the town by state law, in the event the municipal budget approved under the preceding articles will result in a tax commitment that is greater than the property tax levy limit.

Large spending items on the warrant include whether to raise and appropriate $60,600 for the Fire Department, $80,200 for the transfer station, $427,000 for the highway department, and $196,450 for the administrative budget.

Elections also will be held for a selectman for the three-member board and a director for the SAD 44 board, both for three-year terms.

Residents also will consider whether to allow town officials to enter into multi-year contracts for town services including assessing, ambulance service, banking and trash removal.
