PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – In a March 23 story about the U.S. Senate race in Rhode Island, The Associated Press, relying on a spokesman for the Federal Elections Commission, gave erroneous figures for the largest fines levied by the FEC for campaign contributions given under someone else’s name.

FEC spokesman George Smaragdis initially said eight out of the 10 largest fines were for that type of violation. Later, he said seven of the nine largest fines were for that type of violation.

The story also misstated the year when Rick McAuliffe raised money for John Kerry’s presidential bid. It was 2004, not 2002.
