AUBURN – Marion Orbeton Ludwick Hewett, 84, of Auburn and Winthrop, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 23.

The daughter of C. Earle Ludwick and Grace Orbeton Ludwick and the younger sister of Crosby L. Ludwick, Marion was born in Rockland, on July 2, 1921. She graduated from Rockland High School in 1938 and Bates College in 1942, where she was chosen as a member of Phi Sigma Iota, an honorary language society.

She married her high school sweetheart, Russell Sprague Hewett, in 1946. The two lived in Brunswick while he finished college after World War II, and she did the billing for Pejepscot Paper Co. Later, they made their lives in Lisbon (1950-52), Auburn (1952-1965) and Winthrop (1965-2005). Last summer, they moved from Winthrop to Schooner Estates in Auburn.

She was the proud parent of two children, Charles Earle Hewett of Holden and Martha Jean Hewett of Minneapolis, Minn. She adored playing games and talking with her grandchildren, Elizabeth Hewett, Samuel Hewett and Nathaniel Hewett, all of Holden, and would give up almost anything for an opportunity to get together with them. She tremendously enjoyed visits to Minnesota with her daughter and looked forward with great anticipation to her daughter’s visits home.

A born teacher, she taught French and/or English in Rockland, Belfast, Auburn and Winthrop at both the junior high and high school levels. Naturally supportive and interested in people, she believed in her students and helped many to believe in themselves.

Years later, numerous students looked her up to tell her what an important difference she had made in their lives. She also served for a number of years as the secretary to the late Rev. Frederick D. Hayes of the High Street Congregational Church in Auburn. Retiring from teaching in 1972, she became an administrative assistant of Maine School Management Association, where she worked until 1980.

She naturally made friends wherever she went and was generous with both her time and attention. After retiring, she and her husband, Russell spent many years ensuring that people suffering illness or loss were supported and cared for. During a number of illnesses that she and Russell suffered over the past decade, her friends, particularly her Winthrop neighbors, generously cared for them. She wrote part of this obituary herself and added the following comment: “I would wish for no greater joy than the life I have lived – surrounded by people I loved and who loved me.”

She was a member of the Winthrop Congregational Church UCC, where she taught Sunday school and served as a deacon.

She is survived by her husband, Russell; her son, Charles, his wife, Jacqueline and their children, Elizabeth, Sam and Nat; her daughter, Martha Hewett and her partner, Linda Varvel; and five nephews, Stephen Ludwick of New Hampshire, Gregory Hewett of Vermont, Frederick and David Hewett, both of Massachusetts, and Jeffrey Hewett of Cape Elizabeth.

She was predeceased by her brother, Crosby L. Ludwick.
