PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – Neighbors and a legislator are asking the Port of New Hampshire to stop overnight work so they can get some sleep.

They want the terminal that unloads scrap metal and mountains of road salt to stop work from 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Portsmouth Democrat Laura Pantelakos wrote to the Pease Development Authority on behalf of constitutuents who say the salt operations, particularly, are keeping them up. Front-end loaders that move salt have automatic back-up alarms that beep loudly when they move in reverse, and neighbors say that can be all night long.

Pantelakos suggested a conveyer belt system would make a lot less noise.
