As a parent of a Lewiston High School hockey player, I would like to thank the Sun Journal and surrounding communities for the wonderful support the team enjoyed leading up to the Class A state title game on March 11 at the Colisee.

LHS Athletic Director Jason Fuller did a fine job of getting school spirit back on board, and the student body responded with great enthusiasm not seen in many years.

High school hockey has been going through changes in recent years with more players leaving their respective high schools to play for other programs with the dreams of “making it big,” which more often than not only gets them hurt or disappointed to be sitting on the sidelines. Once one player leaves the team, then a few more follow along, decimating a team’s chances during the playoffs.

For those players who are on the fence, remember that the state title game was standing-room only and many hockey players were in attendance who had hoped to be on that ice. Not even the Maineiacs sold out this year!

The boys on that ice were extremely proud to be playing for their high school and having their student body cheer them on. My advice is this: don’t rush it! You only get to be a kid once and high school hockey should be a cherished memory that you can take with you to your high school reunions. There is plenty of time for junior hockey after graduation.
