SABATTUS – Town Administrator Tracy Fabrizio and Lewiston Public Library Director Rick Speer are scheduled to talk today about the idea of Sabattus paying a fee for residents to use the city’s library.

At Monday night’s meeting of selectmen, Fabrizio said she has been communicating with Speer in hopes of striking a deal that would benefit both municipalities.

Chairman Guy Desjardins said Lewiston’s numbers at the library have been low and working with Sabattus would help increase the library’s revenue.

“If things work out for the best, we can get an article in the town warrant asking taxpayers to raise and appropriate a sum of money that would cover membership costs for the town,” Desjardins said. “We are just proposing this idea. We do not know what Lewiston will say.”

Speer said he has to talk to some people before any decision can be announced.

When the Town Square Community Library closed more than a year ago, hundreds of children’s books were placed in boxes. The volunteer library board threw in its towel after plans to set up shop at the Sabattus Residential Care fell through.

Recently, residents have been hoping to rekindle efforts to get the town a library, but the town has no plan for one.

The Lewiston library is open to nonresidents for a fee, which many Sabattus residents said is too high for them.
