Brush being burned in a burn pit at the home of Adrian LeBlanc on East Bethel Road quickly spread to grass, brush and a nearby shed Tuesday. Bethel fire Chief Jim Young said less than a half-acre was scorched, and minor damage was caused to the corner of the shed. He said his department, and many others, are not issuing burn permits because of the dryness of surface vegetation caused by winds and a lack of snow. About a dozen firefighters from Bethel and nearby Greenwood turned out. The scene was cleared in about an hour.
