PORTLAND – The Choral Art Society will sing Handel’s “Messiah” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at Portland’s Merrill Auditorium. The “Messiah” is known for its intimate and intricate pieces, requiring nimble voices and instruments, in addition to its grandiose and spectacular sections.
This performance will feature a full orchestra, the 100-plus members of the Choral Art Society Masterworks Chorus and the smaller Camerata ensemble. Guest soloists are Jessica Cooper, Gail Fuller, Ray Bauwens and Robert Honeysucker.
Cooper was the New England region winner of the national NATSAA competition and was a national semifinalist for the NATSAA competition in San Diego last summer. She sang the soprano roles in Handel’s “Samson” with the Boston Cecilia in Jordan Hall.
Fuller, also from the Boston area, has performed with many companies throughout the United States, including San Diego Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Sacramento Opera, Opera Syracuse, Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Philharmonic and more. Fuller also made her Carnegie Hall debut recently in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony with the Boston Philharmonic under the baton of Benjamin Zander.
Bauwenshas has sung at opera and choral concerts with the Boston Academy of Music, the Concord Orchestra and the OperaFest of New Hampshire. He has sung in the “Messiah” before, with the Handel and Haydn Society.
Honeysucker has sung extensively here and abroad. Opera performances include “Il Trovatore,” “La Traviata,” and “Falstaff” with the Boston Lyric Opera and appearances with the opera companies of Sacramento, Delaware, Tulsa, Kansas City, Utah, Fort Worth and the Opera Company of Boston.
Tickets to the Sunday matinee are $19 to $49 and can be purchased at the PortTix box office, 20 Myrtle St., between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.porttix.com, or call 842-0800.
