South Paris – John P. Harper I, 80, formerly of Turner and Auburn, passed away unexpectedly at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on July 24, 1925, a son of Joseph T. and Anna A. (Cloves) Harper.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II as a fireman. He was employed in past years at Wellman’s, Bates Mill, Channel 10 in Lewiston, as a steeple jack, painter, carpenter prior to retirement. He later worked part time at Bogg’s Mobile Homes in Warren during his retirement.

He enjoyed woodworking, watching the Red Sox, keeping abreast of local and national affairs via television and the newspaper, doing crossword puzzles, bird watching and spending time with his special pets. Supporting the Maine State Lottery was a favorite pastime. He was a Scout Master and past member of the Drum and Bugle Corps, VFW, American Legion, and barber shop quartet.

Survived by six children, Barbara J. Homer of Falmouth, Ann H. Labbe of Vienna, Va., Robert J. Harper of Saunton, Va., John P. Harper II of Wasilla, Alaska, Erma L. Brutscher of Monkton, Md., Carol E. Turner of Greene, and one sister, Catherine M. Farrill of Aurora, Colo.

He was predeceased by parents; and brothers, Harry Harper and Tom Harper.
