A 20-year-old Monmouth man died instantly Tuesday morning after the car he was driving slammed into a utility pole in Belgrade, police said.
Robert A. Glover of 89 Berry Road was westbound on Route 135 alone in his 2000 Mercury Sable when it veered off the road and hit a pole on the driver’s side. There were no “discernible” skid marks at the scene, said Maine State Police Lt. Dale Lancaster.
Although speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, investigators are looking at whether alcohol or driver fatigue might have played a role, Lancaster said.
Glover, who was single, was apparently headed home around 1:30 a.m. after visiting his girlfriend when the accident happened, Lancaster said. Glover was an officer in corrections at the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department, where he had worked since June 2005.
Lancaster said Glover was not driving a county vehicle and was not conducting county business at the time.
He was not wearing a seat belt and apparently died from internal injuries, Lancaster said.
