One of the most important matters which has been brought to the attention of the Auburn School Board for sometime was listened to last evening. Supt. Payson Smith recommended that the salary schedule of teachers be raised, believing by taking this step that the city will have by far better educational facilities at an expense not greatly in excess of what is already being paid.

Supt. Smith stated that according to the present salary schedule all primary and rural teachers are appointed at the minimum salary of $7 per week and an increase of $.50 per week each subsequent year until a maximum of $10 per week is paid.

Under the schedule until a school year of 36 weeks the highest annual salary paid to any grade teacher is $396. The City of Lewiston has 45 grade teachers receiving higher salaries than this reaching as high as $500.

Who would help smiling in weather warm enough to bring convertible tops down?

The sun shone brightly all day and the mercury climbed to a pleasant 58 degrees at 2 p.m. The early morning was chilly with the mercury at 27 degrees at 5 a.m. but after the sun got to work the temperature rose quickly to 48 degrees at 9 a.m. and 53 degrees at noon.

The date’s record temperatures were set in 1928 when the mercury hit 76 degrees and again in 1891 when it dropped to 16 degrees.

25 Years Ago, 1981

The five-day countdown to launch America’s first space shuttle began Sunday shortly before midnight while space agency technicians worked to eliminate a short circuit deep inside the ship’s engine.

Officials said the electrical problem would be fixed, with time to spare, for launch of the Columbia on Friday from Kennedy Space Center.

Ignition – “blastoff” – is scheduled for 6:50 a.m. Friday, propelling astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen into space for 36 orbits and 54½ hours.
