JAY – A third raccoon in two months tested positive for rabies Thursday in North Jay.

The raccoon was at the Pleasant Drive Trailer Park across from Maxwell Road on Route 4 and within two miles of the two rabid raccoon cases in February, Jay Animal Control Officer Larry Wright said Friday.

Police and Wright responded to park where the raccoon was reported near a trailer on Wednesday. The raccoon would walk a few steps and fall down, Wright said.

“It could hardly stand up,” he said.

The raccoon was in the last stages of the disease and Jay police officer Troy Young shot it, Wright said. He took it to be tested and the results came back positive.

Wright said he will be putting out traps to catch the stray cats in the park, which may have come in contact with the rabid animal. Those cats without owners will be put down, he said.

Wright said he plans to visit the park and talk to residents.
