Auburn – Leona H. Vye, 85, former longtime resident of the Pownal Road in Auburn, died Tuesday, April 11, at Clover Manor with family at her side.

She was born in Lisbon Dec. 18, 1920, a daughter of Francois and Olivine (Levesque) Hamel. She was educated in Lisbon schools and remained a lifelong resident of this community. On May 2, 1942, she married Harrison Vye, who passed away Nov. 3, 1997.

She worked many years at Bates Mill until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of St. Louis Church and the Ladies’ Auxilliary of both the American Legion and the D.A.V. As a young lady, around 1940, she was also a member, for a time, of a local, all-girls marching band and drill team called Le Garde Evangeline of Lewiston. Among her favorite enjoyments were gardening, fishing, listening to music, dancing and playing Beano. She also loved spending many quality weekends at the coast with her family.

She leaves a daughter, Judy Emond and her husband, Normand, of Sabattus; three sons, Ronald Vye of Auburn, Donald Vye of Southington, Conn. and Gerald Vye and his wife, Roseann, of Castleton, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mickey Wiggins and her husband, Elliot, of Gray; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Solange Danforth; two brothers, Ray and Julien Hamel; a daughter, Shirley Ann; two grandsons, Cory and Donald Gauthier; and her son-in-law, William Gauthier.
