Open house

STANDISH – Saint Joseph’s College will hold an open house for high school juniors on Friday, April 21. Admission staff and current students will offer tours and share information on how to prepare for a strong interview, how to write an effective college essay, four basic areas that can give balance to a college decision and admission and financial aid facts.

USM speaker

PORTLAND – Paul Rusesabagina, the man whose story inspired the film “Hotel Rwanda,” will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, in the University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Lecture Hall, Abromson Community Education Center, Bedford Street.

The event, free and open to the public, is designed to raise awareness about how global passivity allows atrocities of the magnitude of the Rwandan genocide to continue. He will sign copies of his recently released autobiography, “An Ordinary Man.”

Record broken

PORTLAND – Through the Big Apple Convenience Stores and their heating oil locations the C.N. Brown Co. has broken records for Shamrock Mobile sales to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

More than $53,000 was raised to help families dealing with any one of the 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Maine.

Cancer conference

AUGUSTA – A statewide conference designed to help facilitate collaboration with educators, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech services and all members of special education teams will be held on Wednesday, May 3, at the Augusta Civic Center.

The conference will help educators and medical professionals gain an understanding of the complex educational issues faced by children being treated for cancer, understand different childhood cancers and how they effect school re-entry and learn strategies to support the child and educational team members and tips on collaborating with hospitals, clinics, and other special service providers.

The fee of $35 includes workshop materials and lunch. Nursing CEU’s and social worker contact hours are available. To obtain a brochure or to learn more about the workshop, call the American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345.

AmeriCorps grant

PORTLAND – The Community Resource Corps has announced that under its $1.5 million AmeriCorps grant, it is seeking to place 43 full-time AmeriCorps members in the fall. Applications from organizations that have the capacity to utilize an AmeriCorps member for a 1,700-hour, 11-month position are being accepted through May 5.

The corps has been granted $500,000 a year by the Maine Commission for Community Service to fund 43 AmeriCorps members. Each member will serve one year with an organization committed to providing critical needs in the areas of youth service, preventative health care, affordable housing, domestic violence, energy conservation and many others.

Rose society

CAMDEN – The Mid-Maine Rose Society will meet at noon Sunday, May 7, for a brown bag lunch at Merry Spring Park. The meeting will start at 1 p.m. Glenn Jenks will be the speaker. He attended the first meeting of the society on Aug. 5, 1991.

Canoe symposium

BRIDGTON – The annual Maine Canoe Symposium, where paddlers of all ages and abilities learn “hands-on” from North America’s foremost canoeing professionals, will be held on Moose Pond at the Winona Camps on June 9 to 11.

Attendees can choose from more than 75 programs. Registration fees for the weekend are $80 for adults and $40 for children age 12 and under. Meals and accommodations are additional. Family discounts are available.
