LEWISTON – Hero-turned-fugitive Jeffrey Glover turned himself in Wednesday after a story about him ran in the morning paper.

Glover, 38, failed to show up to begin serving a prison sentence on Monday. He’ll now serve 18 months for a 2004 convenience store robbery.

Local, state and federal police investigators had been searching for Glover since Monday when he failed to report to prison officials. He had been given the weekend to get his affairs in order before beginning the sentence.

Police said on Wednesday, several people called them with leads to Glover’s whereabouts after reading the news story about him. When Glover heard about the press attention, he came forward and turned himself in, police said.

In October 2004, Glover was lauded for hauling a man out of a burning Lisbon Street building. Three months later, he was named as the suspect who threatened a Big Apple clerk and forced her into a store freezer during an early morning robbery.

Glover was arrested in February 2005 and last week was sentenced to eight years in prison for the heist. All but 18 months were suspended.

Police said that on Monday, Glover’s girlfriend drove him to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office to drop him off. Instead of going inside, Glover bolted, police said.

Lewiston police Detective Brian O’Malley, who investigated the robbery, had been searching for Glover since. He was joined by police from other local departments and agents from the Central Maine Violent Crime Task Force.
