Women’s award

AUGUSTA – Women’s leadership in Maine will be the highlight of Women, Work and Community’s annual event from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Senator Inn.

Theodora Kalikow, Ph.D., president, University of Maine at Farmington, will be the featured speaker followed by the presentation of the second Merle Nelson Women Making A Difference Award.

Nelson, the first recipient, played a role as a state legislator in the founding of the organization.

Speakout training

PORTLAND – Maine SpeakOut Project, a program of Community Counseling Center, will hold training for volunteer speakers on Saturday, May 13, at its offices on 43 Baxter Boulevard.

The free training session will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Participants will learn about developing and telling a personal story for educational purposes, speaking and working with a co-speaker, facilitating non-divisive dialogue, responding to difficult or hostile responses effectively and how to refer and recommend resources for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Medicare D help

BUCKFIELD – DFD Russell Medical Centers, in collaboration with SeniorsPlus, the local area agency on aging, will hold Medicare Part D information and enrollment clinics at sites listed below.

The initial enrollment deadline is May 15, and many seniors are eligible for “extra help” in paying their Medicare premiums and Medicare prescription drug expenses. Seniors should bring a list of medications, dosages, income information and Medicare and other insurance cards. No appointment is necessary.

Thursday, May 4, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.: Treat Memorial Library, 56 Main St., Livermore Falls.

Thursday, May 4, from 5 to 7 p.m.: Hebron Municipal Building, 351 Paris Road, Hebron.

Thursday, May 11, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.: Buckfield Municipal Building, 34 Turner St., Buckfield.

Sled dog results

JACKMAN – The International Sled Dog Racing Association announces the results of Northeast Championship Skijoring races that took place on March 5. The event was hosted by the Down East Sled Dog Club.

ISDRA Musher Betsy McGettigan of Norway took first in the adult one-dog speed class. McGettigan took sixth in the adult four-dog speed class.

ISDRA Musher Jeff Brannen of Poland took ninth in the adult four-dog speed class. He also took first in the adult two-dog speed class. Brannen took third in the adult one-dog speed class.

ISDRA Musher Heather Brannen of Poland took sixth in the adult two-dog speed class.

The Northeast Championship-Jackman was sanctioned by the International Sled Dog Racing Association and counts toward the International Championship Series for Sled Dog Racing. To learn more about sled dog racing or the event, visit http://www.isdra.org.
