BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) – The unveiling of the first statue of John F. Kennedy on Cape Cod has been postponed because of a delay in federal funds for the project.
An elaborate May 29 unveiling of the statue was planned, but now the ceremony is postponed indefinitely because the federal money is needed to pay $40,000 owed the sculptor and $8,000 due the foundry that’s casting the life-sized statue in bronze, the Cape Cod Times reported.
“The whole committee’s disappointed,” said Len Gobeil, fundraising chairman of the JFK Memorial Statue Committee.
Aides from U.S. Rep. William Delahunt’s office said the money would arrive, but they don’t know when.
“We had thought that by January we would start to see money,” said Mark Forest, Delahunt’s chief of staff. He added, “This is not the only project that has been delayed.”
The famous Kennedy compound is located in Hyannisport, which is part of Barnstable. Kennedy wrote of his Cape home as a place where he could be rejuvenated and appreciate nature’s beauty.
The 6-foot, 400-pound bronze statue of Kennedy will depict him walking barefoot on a mound of real sand accented with live grass.
