AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA will present a back-care yoga workshop, “Building a Strong Flexible Core,” from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the YMCA’s Yoga Room. The teacher will be Jim Melloh, a certified Amrit Yoga instructor.

“This workshop offers a series of postures to develop a stronger, more flexible and balanced back,” said Tish Caldwell, YMCA wellness coordinator. “It is recommended for people of all ages and all levels of yoga training, including those without any. The workshop will be beneficial for those who exercise regularly, couch potatoes and anyone with chronic back issues. If you are looking to improve your posture, decrease pain, strengthen your back or just want to experience yoga, please join us.”

The workshop is not recommended for those with acute back injuries – though material presented will be useful in the rehab phase of back care, which may help prevent future injuries.

Areas to be covered include: principles of stretching and relaxation; protecting the neck and spine in yoga and other activities; postures to stretch out the back, hips and hamstrings; strengthening the back and abdominals; and principles of back care.

The class will open and close with relaxation modes. Questions will be welcome. A handout will outline a 20-minute routine that attendees can do at home.

Cost is $10 for YMCA members and $15 for nonmembers. Registration is necessary by Tuesday, April 25, and can be done by calling the YMCA at 795-4095 or stopping by the front desk at 62 Turner St. For more information, stop by the facility or visit www.alymca.com.
