RUMFORD – The third annual Every Day in a Woman’s Life: A Celebration of Women’s Health at Rumford Hospital will feature a wide range of free health and wellness offerings on Saturday, April 29.

Although the fair will be divided into sections named for the days of the week, the entire event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon. Most of the fair will be housed in the third-floor specialty clinic area of the hospital.

“Pamper Yourself Day” Sunday will feature makeup, all natural skin care and facials. Cindy Toher of the Rumford Hospital Pharmacy will coordinate the section.

In the Monday “Eat to Live” section, fairgoers will find healthy, nutritious foods. Rumford Hospital Diabetes Educator Colleen Dutile will be on hand with a free light breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. and there will be food samples, nutrition information and healthy recipes throughout the fair. Joette Carlton, RN, birthing center manager, has brought the section together.

Tuesday will “Bring Joy to Your Life through Qi Gong” in the hospital lobby with Deborah Gorham, RN, day coordinator. Qi Gong is an ancient healing method. There will also be massages and Reiki, another healing technique.

The Wednesday section will be devoted to exercise, including dance and belly dancing. Exercise for elders will be demonstrated as well.

The Thursday section will include free cholesterol screenings. Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice will take blood pressures. Rachel Hill, who travels with the Central Maine Medical Family wellness van, will offer osteoporosis screening. Certified Nurse Midwife Daisy Goodman will do clinical breast exams and teach women how to do self-exams.

Also in that section, Nurse Practitioner Mary Dunlap of Swift River Health Care will perform skin exams. The American Cancer Society will have a table. Mandy Jordan, also from Swift River Health Care, will talk about the low-income prescription program.

Kathy Sutton, RN, of the birthing center, will talk about hypnobirthing. The table on bladder control will return, and Anne Dolloff, RN, will offer advance directives forms.

“Laughter Is the Best Medicine” Friday will offer an opportunity to dress up in scarves and hats, take umbrellas, children’s books and other silly props and have mother-daughter(s) photos taken. Later there will be a chance to “crop” the photo at the scrapbooking table.

“Creative Health” is the Saturday section theme. In addition to matting for the mother/daughter photos, there will be quilting and basketry.

Rumford Hospital’s Diane York, RN, will be joined by her daughter, Kimberly Brown, a chef, for a new twist on York’s gardening theme – growing and cooking with herbs. Dried floral arrangements will be shown.

Throughout the morning there will be talks in the “Chat Room.” Rumford Hospital Pharmacist Gus Carlson will start off at 8:30 a.m. with Medicare Part D. Although he cannot offer specific advice, he will give an overview in easy-to-understand terms. At 9 Deborah Gorham will hold a stress reduction session.

“Choices for Women,” with Certified Nurse Midwife Daisy Goodman, will begin at 10. Goodman is also a women’s nurse practitioner. She will talk and answer questions about the health-related choices that women make throughout their lives. OB/GYN Gary Baldwin will talk with women about a number of health topics at 11 a.m.

The fair is free and open to girls and women of all ages.
