Residents of Central Maine came to the Save Darfur Rally in Lewiston recently and stood up to be counted against genocide and the ongoing violence in Sudan.
The rally was the result of a lot of hard work and dedication by many students at Bates College and the Bates chaplain’s office. It couldn’t have happened without them. I offer special thanks to Bates student Mimi Ikerezi, for having the courage to share with those present her experiences as a child during the genocide in her native Rwanda in 1994.
The rally is over, but the crisis in Darfur continues. Whether you were at the rally, we must urge the president and our congressional representatives to use American power and resources to save lives in Darfur.
In a free society, some are guilty but all are responsible. Please help us get our government to do what it can to end the genocide in Darfur.
Too many times in the past, the world has known that genocides were happening and did nothing. This must not happen on our watch.
