LEWISTON – A man was cited for criminal violations Saturday evening after he smashed windows at his Bartlett Street home, then attacked police.

Officers subdued the man on his porch, then cuffed his bloody hands behind his back. They carried him down the front lawn before placing him on a stretcher. His T-shirt was pulled over his head, possibly to keep him from spitting on police.

Police Lt. Donald Mailhot said they believed the man was emotionally disturbed. He was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. He was treated for cuts on his hands and arms and was observed for mental health, Mailhot said. For that reason, police declined to identify the man.

He was not arrested but was cited for criminal mischief and failure to submit to arrest, Mailhot said.

His family called police when the man started smashing windows on the first floor of the apartment building.

The officer he attacked was not injured but was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center and treated for blood exposure, Mailhot said.
