NEW YORK (AP) – A Moroccan diplomat was issued a summons for drunken driving after police on Sunday morning spotted his car swerving in and out of traffic near the United Nations.
Abdelmajid Amrani Nadjar, 37, was “traveling recklessly” in a silver Honda Civic about 8 a.m. in east midtown, police said.
He was also issued summonses for reckless driving and failure to signal a lane change but police released him from custody on grounds of diplomatic immunity.
In April, Russian diplomat Ilya Sergeyevich Morozov hit a New York City police officer while driving drunk on FDR Drive, police said.
Morozov was avoiding orange construction cones when he struck the officer, who was directing traffic. The officer suffered a sprained knee.
The press secretary for the Russian mission has denied that Morozov was intoxicated or involved in hitting the police officer.
Police did not arrest Morozov because of his diplomatic immunity. Russia rejected a U.S. request to waive his immunity, and sent him back to Moscow instead.
