Dear Sun Spots: On June 7, my dear grandfather, Harold Comstock, will celebrate his 100th birthday!

He was born in Lewiston to John and Anne Comstock in 1906. My grandfather lived in the Lewiston area until he was about 15 years old, at which time the family moved to Texas looking for work. My grandfather has many fond memories of his youth spent in the Lewiston area. He loves to tell his many family members about growing up in Maine. I thought it would be a wonderful surprise for his birthday if a few people from the Lewiston area would send him a postcard from Maine on his birthday. Answer: Congratulations to your grandfather! What a wonderful celebration. Hopefully, generous column readers will be willing to send along their congratulatory messages. Sun Spots also wonders if you are aware of the White House birthday greetings, available to United States citizens only. While you have missed the deadline for this year – the request must be received six weeks in advance of the event date – Sun Spots believes you could submit a letter well in advance of his 2007 birthday! The office makes every effort to honor requests, but cannot guarantee a greeting if this guideline is not met. Greetings are generally not sent after the event date, except for wedding congratulations and newborn acknowledgments.

• Anniversary greetings are extended only to those couples who are celebrating their 50th (and subsequent) wedding anniversary.

• Birthday greetings will be sent only to individuals 80 years of age and above.

• A limited number of special occasions other than birthdays and anniversaries exist for which the Greetings Office will send appropriate recognition to United States citizens. These occasions include important events such as:

Wedding (send your request after the event).

Baby’s birth (must be born during the George W. Bush administration; send request after baby’s birth).

Eagle Scout Award.

Girl Scout Gold Award.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah or equivalent occasion.

• Please include the following in your request: name and home address of honoree(s), form of address (Mr., Ms., Mrs., Dr., Miss, etc.), exact date of occasion (month, day, year), age (birthdays) or number of years of marriage, your (the requester’s) name and daytime phone number. For wedding (include couple’s married names and current or new address). Baby’s birth (include baby’s date of birth and full names and address of baby and parents).

• In most cases, greetings will be mailed from the White House approximately 10 days prior to the event.

Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for shops in central and/or southern Maine that take crafts on consignment. I’d like to sell some crafts, mostly hand-knit items. I’m also interested in any upcoming church/school fairs.

Answer: You might consider contacting Marian Culbert, who is assisting with the annual East Otisfield Baptist Church craft fair. This year’s will be held July 22 at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, Paris. Tables are available for rent. For more information, phone Culbert at 743-9832. This fair raises funds for scholarships. Last year’s proceeds provided scholarships to three students.
