GORHAM – Eddie Skeffington and Max Arsenault each drove in three runs apiece to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 10-1 win over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Wednesday in the first game of the 2006 LEC Baseball Championship.

Southern Maine took an early lead after Skeffington smacked a two-run triple. Freshman pitcher Chris Burleson struck out nine batters in the win.

The Corsairs (9-26) scored their lone run in the top of the sixth following an RBI double to left field from Eric Griswold.

Softball

Wellesley 9, USM 1

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Jenna Harvey earned her 10th win of the season to lead Wellesley College to a 9-1 triumph over the University of Southern Maine in a quarterfinal game of the 2006 ECAC Division III New England Softball Championships Wednesday afternoon.

Harvey silenced the Huskies (23-10) bats, fanning 10 batters and allowing just one earned run and two hits. Amanda Tai smacked a two-run single, Kara Wong hit an RBI double, and Samantha Littlejohn had an RBI triple. In the fifth inning, Wellesley (22-11) plated three more runs to invoke the eight-run rule to seal the win.

Southern Maine scored its only run of the contest when Katie Mainville drew a walk to score Sabrina Mills.

Lacrosse

Colby 21, Plymouth State 5

WATERVILLE – Allie Libby recorded a hat trick and dished off five assists to lead Colby to a 21-5 victory over Plymouth State in women’s lacrosse action Wednesday.

Lauren Barrett chipped in for the Mules (14-3) with four goals and one assist, while Kate Sheridan added three goals and two assists. Catharine O’Brien made five saves in net to notch the win.

Plymouth State was paced by Bethany Brown with two goals, while single tallies by Meg Cupoli, Nicole Evans and Liz Boddy completed the scoring. Lindsay DeLorie and Sarah Beebe combined talents in net, turning aside 13 shots.
