I appreciate your editorial denouncing the proposed Oxford County casino (May 9). As the head of a social service agency, I cannot hear often enough that casinos are bad economic development that prey on folks who need real jobs, not the false hope of a slot machine.

That said, I need to point out one misrepresentation in your editorial. You intimated that opposition to a casino comes from the southern part of our state. In fact, when the casino was voted down in 2003, it lost in every Maine county. Indeed, if you look at our eight northernmost counties, including Oxford, you will see that the casino lost by a staggering 37-63 percent.

Far from this being a southern Maine vs. northern Maine issue, this is an issue in which all Maine people recognize how much we will lose if casinos are allowed to open.
