Society speaker

RUMFORD – The Rumford Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, in the conference room of the Municipal Building. Bill Weston will speak about the piers in the Androscoggin River.

There will also be a discussion of summer plans, including the plant/lawn/food sale that will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 3. That day will be the first day for the museum to be open and the sale will be held on the museum lawn in Rumford Center.

DIXFIELD – A rummage sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 20, in the Annex at Dixfield Congregational Church. Coffee and doughnuts will also be for sale.

College workshop

MEXICO – A special workshop to explore learning options leading to teacher ceritification in Maine will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at University College at Rumford/Mexico, 13 Brown St. Participants will be linked with other University College locations across the state through videoconference.

The workshop, led by Robert Ellis, director of University College at Rumford/Mexcio, will cover the range of off-campus university programs that can lead to conditional teacher certification or to additional certification for established teachers.

University College summer and fall semesters offer a variety of online and interactive television courses of interest to aspiring teachers. A listing is available by visiting www.learn.maine.edu/courses.

Collecting phones

RUMFORD – The Rumford Lodge of Elks 862 is collecting used cell phones for the Phones to Fight Kids Cancer program. Proceeds will be given to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. The lodge is also collecting toner and inkjet cartridges for the Cartridges for Cancer Cures program. Proceeds will also be given to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Cell phones, toner and inkjet cartridges may be dropped off the lodge at 60 River St. or by calling Debi Briggs at 364-2479 or Ann White at 364-7081.

The group is also collecting old flags that area people need to have disposed of properly. A flag-burning ceremony is being planned in the near future. Flags can be dropped off at the lodge or people can call any officer or member of the lodge.

Grange dinner

RUMFORD – Rumford Grange 115 will sponsor a public roast beef dinner with all the fixings from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the grange in Rumford Center. Cost is adults, $7; children 12 and under, $3; take-outs available.
