New officers

PARIS – Paris Cape Historical Society’s Nominating Committee, consisting of Cynthia Immonen, Kay Colby and Chandler Briggs, met May 18 to choose a new slate of officers. They are as follows: president, Glenn Davis; vice president, Ben Conant; secretary/treasurer, Cynthia Immonen; trustees to 2009, Chandler Briggs and Albert Payne; trustees to 2008, Barbara Robinson and John Davis; trustees to 2007, Merle Glines and Bill Immonen; membership chairwoman, Cynthia Immonen; corresponding secretary, Marilyn Jones; auditors, Barbara Payne and Jean Cummings; curator, Ben Conant. The officers were elected at the May meeting.

Yard sale set

NORWAY – The Hillsmen Barbershop Chorus will host a fundraising yard sale and “Tail-Gate” flea market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 27, in the parking lot of Dr. Tere Porter’s office, corner of Alpine and Paris streets, diagonally across from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. There will be coffee, hot dogs and other refreshments available.

Special service

NORWAY – The First Universalist Church of Norway will have a special service of music, led by Grace Lewis-McLaren, on Sunday, May 28.

Lewis-McLaren claims Maine roots six-generations deep. Her church music career began when she was a student at Eastman School of Music. Since then she has held positions in New York, California and Maine. She serves on the Northeast District Program Committee, the NED Extension Committee and is co-leading the Welcoming Congregation Committee for the UU Church of Brunswick.

Lewis-McLaren has been writing music especially for UUs since 1977. Some of her work is published in the UU hymnal hymnal, “Singing the Living Tradition.” Several of her hymns have had a general assembly theme.

The service is titled “Singing as a Spiritual Practice.” An ordained lay-minister, Lewis-McLaren has led services for congregations from coast to coast. For more information, contact the church office at 743-2828 or e-mail norwayuu@gwi.net.

House tours

BETHEL – The Bethel Historical Society will host its 2006 house tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17. The tour will feature nine Bethel homes ranging from a circa-1820 Federal-style house to an early 19th century barn conversion as well as several contemporary houses.

Luncheon will be served in the exhibit hall of the Dr. Moses Mason House from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

Tickets will be available on the days of the tour and in advance beginning Saturday, May 27, at the society’s museum shop in the Robinson House, 10 Broad St. The price of $20 includes luncheon and descriptive flyer. Bridge play

NORWAY – The Oxford Hills Bridge Club met May 19 at the Fare Share Common, Main Street, where a Howell movement was played.

Finishing first in Flight A were Mike Quinn and Fred Letourneau with Eric Sahlberg and Richard Balian; third, Marta Clements and Nancy Farmer.

Finishing first in Flight B and C were Georgette Jewell and Adena Doyle with Kathy and Pete Cummings second in B and Barbara Beegel and Bill Bowman, second in C.
