Dear Sun Spots: I am writing to ask you how jurors are chosen for jury duty?

Answer: According to the state of Maine Judicial Branch at www.courts.state.me.us/jurors/selection.html, the Superior Court in each county maintains a source list, which is used for the random selection of prospective jurors. Names are placed on the list from the lists of licensed drivers, those issued an identification card by the secretary of state, and those who notify the clerk of the Superior Court in the county of their residence and request to have their name placed on the source list of prospective jurors.

You will find a listing of the courts in all Maine counties posted on the Web site, should you desire a contact for signing up for jury duty.

In addition, you should note that according to the Web site, Maine law disqualifies from jury service non-U.S. citizens, persons under the age of 18, nonresidents of the particular county and persons who cannot understand the English language. Maine law exempts the governor, judges, physicians and dentists providing active patient care, veterinarians with or in an active veterinary medicine practice, sheriffs, attorneys and members of the armed forces on active duty from jury service.

Dear Sun Spots: If any of your readers have any cell phones they no longer are using, the Maine Elks Association could use them to help us raise money for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program in Portland. As you know, MCCP helps children and their families from all over the state of Maine (and other states) fight cancer. We send each cell phone to a company, and they send us a check. We are also looking for businesses through Maine to help us with a Longerberger Basket Bingo the Maine Elks are holding in October to raise money for the many charities we support. Dear Sun Spots: I am trying to get in contact with a woman who attended the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society Strutt Your Mutt Walk on Saturday. She was accompanying a woman wearing a purple or blue jacket and a white hat who was in a wheelchair. She asked me if the woman with her could hold my dachshund for a photograph.
