LEWISTON – City Councilor Renee Bernier hopes to seek the Androscoggin County Commission seat for District 3 after next month’s Democratic primary.

Bernier has been a Lewiston city councilor for six years. She served on the Lewiston School Committee for six years before that.

District 3 covers all of Lewiston.

Bernier served as the city’s appointment to the Androscoggin County Budget Committee in 2004.

“It was a real eye-opener, as well as a strong deciding factor in running for the office,” Bernier wrote. “In order to successfully accomplish a more fiscally responsible county government, the citizens of Lewiston would benefit from electing experience.”

Lewiston’s share of the county tax is $1.3 million.

Bernier said she also hopes to include the county in collaborative efforts with the cities of Lewiston and Auburn.

“County government has been kind of out there by themselves and it’s time to start the collaboration process with the small towns and larger cities,” she said in a prepared statement.
