AUBURN – The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has begun gearing up for its Fourth Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, June 16.

Up to 144 players will play in the tournament at Prospect Hill Golf Course. The event features a noon shotgun start and scramble format. All skill levels are invited to play. The entry fee for the event is $50 per person or $200 for a team of four players and will include 18 holes of golf, a cart and a bag lunch. All proceeds will benefit the capital campaign for the new shelter.

Features of the tournament include cash prizes for first, second and third-place teams and long drive and closest to the pin contests for both men and women. The first golfer to card a hole-in-one will receive a Viking stainless steel gas grill.

After five years of fundraising, the Humane Society began construction April 10 on its new facility at Strawberry Avenue in Lewiston. Currently, thanks to many generous donors, the Humane Society has raised all but $100,000 of the $2.5 million dollar goal. All funds raised at the tournament will go directly toward the building fund.

The current Humane Society, located in Auburn, was built 30 years ago to care for 1,000 animals a year. Currently, between 3,600 and 4,000 homeless, abandoned and abused animals come through its doors each year. The new shelter will be larger, more people and animal-friendly and centrally located so adoptable animals will have a better chance at finding the perfect family.

The shelter serves 11 municipalities, including Lewiston, Auburn, Turner and Greene, and a total population of more than 110,000. For more information about the tournament or the plans for the new shelter, please call director Steven Dostie at 786-4713. You are also invited to visit the shelter at 3312 Hotel Road in Auburn or the website at www.gahumane.org.
