DURHAM – Five people were injured and two cars destroyed in a fiery head-on collision on Rabbit Road late Tuesday afternoon.
Richard Wood, 52, and his wife Robin, 52, of Falmouth were transported to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and admitted. According to the investigating officer Trooper Keith Frank, Wood sustained a broken ankle and chest injuries, and his wife, a fractured leg and internal injuries.
The driver of the second car, Kathleen Curtin, 50, and her two daughters, ages 14 and 15, of Durham complained of pain and were transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for evaluation, he said.
According to Frank, Wood was driving west toward Route 9, and Curtin was driving east toward Route 136. Wood told authorities he crossed into the oncoming lane to avoid pedestrians and the two cars collided head-on.
Curtin’s 1999 Saab station wagon burst into flames on impact and moments later Wood’s 1999 Ford Escort station wagon also erupted in flames. The investigation into the 5:41 p.m. crash was incomplete Tuesday night, Frank said. Durham Fire and Rescue and Freeport Rescue responded to the scene. The road was closed for about an hour.
