FARMINGTON – The town tennis courts at Hippach Field, in use since 1977, are closed for the next week or so for a much needed paint job and crack filling, according to Recreation Department Director Steve Shible.
Shible approached selectmen earlier this year about allocating money away from the department’s reserve account for the job, expected to cost just under $6,000, because the courts had gotten so heavily cracked they were not only an eyesore, but a possible danger to players who might trip on them.
Some of the cracks were more than an inch across, Shible said.
Workmen this week filled the cracks with cement fortified with a latex binder, then sealed them with a crack filler, and finally painted the courts and the lines on them, said Vermont Tennis Corp. representative James Robinson.
The paint should last five years or so, he said. The cracks should stay filled this year and possibly until next.
Shible said the town plans to replace the courts – an approximately $40,000 expense – before 2010.
