Society program

FARMINGTON – The Sandy River Valley Chapter, Maine Genealogical Society, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Farmington Public Library.

Cheryl Patten will explain the “1880 Maine Special Census – Dependent, Defective, Delinquent Classes” and the information that will be of value to genealogist. Anyone with an interest in genealogy is welcome.

Band to play

SALEM – The Narrow Gauge String Band, featuring Gary and Lois Hall with Mike Worthley, will appear at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at the Salem Community Building. A donation box will be at the door, and homemade refreshments will be on sale.

Church birthday

FARMINGTON – Henderson Memorial Baptist Church will celebrate the birthday of the church at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 4, and the public is welcome celebrate at the church located on the corner of Academy and Main streets.

Worship will be led by the children and Sunday school singers, with instrumental music by Esther and Thomas Bizier. Families will receive communion together. The service will be followed by lunch. All are welcome.

Monday meeting

MONDAY – The Monday Club will meet at noon Monday, June 5, at the Homestead Restaurant.

They will have a choice of three entrees. David Hovey with his electronic key board and Maurice Hovey with his harmonica will furnish the entertainment.

Farm meeting

FARMINGTON – A free open meeting for western Maine farmers will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Olsen Student Center, North Dining Hall, University of Maine at Farmington.

Farmers will learn about the buying requirements of Hannafords, local schools, area restaurants, natural food stores and Farm Fresh Connection, the in-state buyer/distributor for local farm products. Representatives from the organizations will speak and answer questions.

The event is sponsored by Western Mountains Alliance and Maine Alternative Agriculture Association’s Eat Smart Eat Local project.

TRIAD program

LEEDS – A TRIAD meeting will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the Rural Community Action Ministry office, 81 Church Hill Road.

The gardening program coordinator will present a program on safe gardening for seniors. All members of the community are invited to attend. Any senior interested in being a member of the TRIAD can attend the meeting or call Susan Gill for more information at 524-5095 or 224-7505.

The Rural Community Action Ministry volunteer for June is Emily Pike of Livermore. She has been with the Faith In Action Program for four years. She has been a volunteer driver, a companion and sits on several RCAM committees, including the new TRIAD.

Preparing trails

RANGELEY – John Field of Seasonal Cycles and a handful of volunteers have been working to ready the mountain bike trails at the Rangeley Lakes Trails Center. There will be an informal race at the Black Fly Festival on June 25, but the primary goal is to have a seven-mile loop in shape for the center’s first Eastern Fat Tire Association sanctioned race on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3.

Volunteers are needed to help with trail maintenance two Sundays a month through the summer. Contact Field at 864-2100.

The trails at the Rangeley Lakes Trails Center, Saddleback Mountain Road, are open for mountain biking, hiking, Nordic walking, nature watching and dog walking.

Friends Sunday

PARIS – Friends Sunday will be observed at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 4, at the First Congregational Church, 17 East Main St., South Paris. Visitors are always welcome, but a couple of times a year the church hosts a Friends Sunday to invite old and new friends to visit the church.

The church is handicapped accessible. While the official Sunday school is in summer hiatus, the church is offering a summer program for Sunday school-age children. They are asked to come to the start of church, then go for time together. Child care is provided for the younger children.
