At this time of the year, I really hate to hear someone say “Happy Memorial Day.” That day is not supposed to be a day of joy or celebration. That day is a day of remembrance of the men and women who never returned home.
Who would say “Happy Memorial Day” to a Gold Star mother, or a war widow, or a soldier who lost comrades in battle?
Next year, when Memorial Day comes, I would ask people to please not say “Happy Memorial Day.” Just remember those men and women. And, quietly, offer a thank-you to those brave people.
