There will be four options on how Rumford residents will determine how the town will be governing in the coming year. I believe option No. 3 is the fairest way for all concerned: the secret-ballot vote at the polls.
After attending some meetings, reading the newspapers and watching the local television station on the issues, I have a suggestion: Rumford residents should have the regular town meeting to go through the articles as they were presented to the selectmen regarding the town’s budget for the coming year. After the article is read, the selectmen give their opinions and then members of the finance committee give their recommendation. Then, in a few days, the voters get to vote on the articles by secret ballot, without any intimidation.
I have been to many town meetings over the years, and it’s very difficult for some to get up and speak in front of a large group. But, as we listen to the pros and cons, it gives us time to think things over before we vote by secret ballot at the polls.
