At Rumford selectmen’s meetings we are treated to the tirades of certain citizens in our community on a regular basis. It is very uncomfortable and unfair to see anyone mistreated in public, yet, there are some who consistently act disrespectfully toward others. How can democracy work if we cannot submit our concerns, questions and complaints in a civil manner?
It is important that we have the ability to speak freely and listen freely in a nonthreatening environment to learn about the issues. I commend the chairman for maintaining his composure and for treating individuals with more respect than the board is treated with. I appreciate the example many citizens set in expressing their concerns with respect.
The Rumford annual town meeting is Monday. The intimidation factor that so many are concerned about would be much less threatening if all stated their concerns with courtesy rather than with accusatory points of view. It is demoralizing to those trying their best to promote our town to be treated with hostility and distrust.
We may need to be taken to task on mistakes we have made, but please remember that all people and organizations make mistakes; we learn from them and do our best to correct them.
Our selectmen, town manager and town employees have the best interests of the community at heart. I see this firsthand every day.
We have a great community with many caring, giving and concerned individuals. Let us treat each other well.
Terri Palmer, Rumford
