Memorial Day in Buckfield was somber and reverent with a sense of pride in being a resident of this great little town. A small parade of veterans marched to the library for a very emotional speech and prayer offering, while young Scouts, also in attendance, proudly saluted and seasoned veterans stood at attention.
Older veterans were seated in chairs on a patriotically decorated trailer in order to actively participate in the ceremony.
Following the deliverance, a respectful round of muted applause commemorated our soldiers as the parade moved on toward the town bridge where a bouquet of lilacs was tossed into the river in memory of our fallen heroes. The memorial service continued at the grave site of our most recent veteran, concluding with a young boy playing taps, followed by an echo of the same in the distance.
The only other sounds heard at the time were the occasional voices of small children reminding us of our hope and freedom for the future.
