It’s been a season on the edge for the Monmouth girls’ tennis team, and the Mustangs showed Saturday it’s not so bad living on the edge as long as you’ve got a sure thing to get you over it.
The sixth-seeded Mustangs upset No. 2 Boothbay Saturday, 3-2 in the Western Class C semifinals. They will face the winner of Monday’s match between No. 9 North Yarmouth Academy and No. 5 Waynflete in the regional final on Wednesday.
Tied at two wins apiece, Monmouth (9-5) needed No. 1 singles Megan Buckley to come through as she has so many times before this season. The junior obliged, beating Boothbay’s Brooke Chaney, 6-3, 6-4.
“Megan Buckley has been awesome,” said Monmouth coach Cathy Irwin. “She’s got a 13-1 record. She’s our automatic point.”
Second singles Becca Irwin (6-4, 6-2 over Breeze Kidder) and second doubles Marissa Griswold and Rhea Bagby (2-6, 6-4, 7-5) secured the Mustangs’ other victories.
“Someone different always steps up for us,” coach Irwin said. “Becca stepped up for us today, but we usually have someone new pick us up when we need it.”
Ali Hartley won third singles and Chelsea Pottle/Sam Cotier first doubles for Boothbay (11-3).
