FARMINGTON – Margaret E. Davenport, 87, of Phillips, passed away Sunday, June 4 , after four months at Edgewood Manor with her family at her side.
She was born April 12, 1919, a daughter of Ella McVoy and George Albert Witham, the youngest of four children. She received her education at Stanley High School in Kingfield, graduating in 1937, followed by the State Street School of Nursing in Portland.
She was employed at the City Hospital in Portland and later at a dentist’s office in that same city. Upon returning to Phillips, she worked at local mills until the death of her husband, whereupon she went to work at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. While there, she passed her state board, where she remained as an LPN for 19 years.
She married Stanton A. Davenport in Portland on Jan. 5, 1947. He passed away Oct. 20, 1962. Through television she was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying golf. She enjoyed playing cribbage with the local tournament in Phillips and before ill health, enjoyed bowling and mini golf. She also enjoyed the winter time and A and E musical events at the Salem Community Center. Quietly taking a back seat, she never missed a single fundraiser, helping with the “Main Street 90” town clock fundraiser for a full year and the penny sale auction and golf tournaments to benefit the Phillips Public Library.
She especially enjoyed shopping at local card shops to find the perfect card for the many family members and friends she wanted to remember. She opened her home during the Old Home week parade to all of her family and friends, so they could find parking and view the parade from a selected spot on Main Street.
She is survived by a son, Peter and his wife, Anne, of Kingfield; two sisters, Florence Beane and Oscarene French of Kingfield; two grandsons, Barry Davenport and his wife, Mikelle, of Kingfield and Brent Davenport and his wife, Bonni, of New Portland; two great-grandchildren, Jacey and Riley Davenport of New Portland; sisters-in-law, Winona Davenport of Phillips and Grace Williams of Gray; brother-in-law, William Davenport of Wilbraham, Mass.; many nieces and nephews; and close friends, Buss and Barb Allen of Middlefield, Conn.
She was predeceased by a brother, Henry; her parents; and a life-long friend, Mable Reed.
