This is in response to the story about the retirement of Lt. Tom Avery (June 1). While reading the story, I was reminded of Lt. Avery’s helpfulness to me when my car’s alternator malfunctioned a few years ago.
My car, filled with groceries, had stopped at the end of Pond Road. A kind policeman from Sabattus stopped behind me. He called the car dealer and a wrecker. While he was doing that, Lt. Avery came to help. He made certain that my car was safe, that it would be picked up and taken to the dealership, put all my groceries into the police car, drove me home, made sure I was safe and my groceries were all inside the house.
He, like the kind gentleman from Sabattus, are truly officers and gentlemen.
