JAY – A man hospitalized with a gunshot wound in his leg will be charged with reckless conduct with a firearm after he fired on police and was shot at his home Tuesday night, police said Wednesday.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said there may be additional charges against William C. Burhoe, 51, of 309 Maycomber Hill Road.

Burhoe was being treated in the intensive care unit at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, a hospital official said Wednesday evening. His condition was not disclosed.

Jay police officers were called to Burhoe’s home after he was reported to be fighting with his son, who was visiting him, McCausland said. The officers asked for backup from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and state police when they learned Burhoe could be armed.

McCausland said Burhoe did have a rifle, and when he began firing at police, Trooper Randall Keaten returned fire, striking him in the leg.

McCausland said no officers were hit. He said the number of shots fired by Burhoe and police, the number of officers at the scene and where Burhoe and officers were positioned is being investigated by the Maine Office of the Attorney General, which is routine procedure in a shooting involving a police officer.

“Keaten is on administrative leave with pay, which is routine protocol in the aftermath of a shooting,” McCausland said.

Burhoe has a history of domestic assault as well as assault against a police officer, Jay police said Wednesday.
